Veterans face complex, multilevel barriers to cancer care, stemming from both system-level obstacles and challenges unique to this patient population. The Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC) surveyed member cancer centers that treat Veterans to better understand the concerns of providers on the frontline of this issue. The findings demonstrate that care coordination between community providers and the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) remains fragmented, federal oncology programs for Veterans are underutilized, and there is strong desire to seek systemic, collaborative solutions.
While Veterans experience disparities in cancer care across the US, the specific challenges they face differ by region. This map illustrates some of the more persistent barriers to treatment in different parts of the country. Click on your region to explore innovations and strategies that may benefit Veterans at your cancer center.
ACCC is committed to identifying barriers in the remaining regions of the US, please contact the ACCC Provider Education department to participate or learn more.
